Despite many efforts and some successes, Indian agriculture has been facing numerous problems like increasing farmer suicides, low level knowledge among farmer, decelerating agricultural growth, decreasing soil fertility, and increasing regional disparity especially after the removal of tariff and non-tariff barriers. These problems not only have serious implications for intergenerational livelihood and food security but also for the competitiveness of the agricultural sector in years to come. Thus, in the present context of weak institutional support, greater competition and environmental degradation, the survival of smallholders is a matter of concern.
